October
10, 2006 - Oslo, Norway - On behalf of Intercamhs, EDC
with Psykisk Helse I Skolen coordinated a pre-conference workshop
on Schools and Mental Health at the 4th
World Conference on the Promotion of Mental Health and Prevention
of Mental Health Disorders.
40 participants worldwide
from Singapore, Scandinavia, North America and Australia participated.
The distinguished panelists and participants engaged in conversation
about critical issues of advocacy, implementation of a range of
programs for students. Power Points of Presentations are attached.
Discussions
centered on such issues as the importance of a principal or headmaster’s
leadership, the need for advocacy, training to convince and prepare
teachers that they can play a most significant role, the challenge
of creating a common language, convincing schools of the link between
mental health, learning and academic achievement, and how to create
coordinating mechanisms across education and mental health. A most
exciting program in Norway has increased awareness of young people’s
mental health needs and drastically shortened the time for seeking
care.
